Charlie Crews used to have a normal life. He had a loving wife, a good job as a police officer, nobody who really disliked him, and was looking forward to a simple wind-down to his life involving retirement and a nice pension. Unfortunately for Crews, things were to be otherwise. When his partner, Tom Seybolt, was murdered along with his wife and son, Crews was framed and tried for the murder. Ultimately, he was convicted. Sentenced to life in prison and stripped of both his badge and his innocence, Crews fell into a state of depression.
For twelve years, Charlie Crews stayed behind bars as the rest of the world moved on without him. In all likelihood, he would have broken under the psychological strain had he not found a copy of the book The Path to Zen. Reading it, he built himself a new outlook on life, and managed to cope. Once he was exonerated, he managed to get back into the LAPD (and got himself a lovely settlement of fifty million dollars, which was managed by the able Ted Earley; Crews' best friend from prison).
Most people find it hard to take Charlie Crews completely seriously. He is generally a very friendly character, saying everything that pops into his head (as noted by his partner, Dani Reese). Signs that he is, in a sense, a broken man are extremely well-hidden under his cheerful exterior, and he tends to gloss over this fact with people that he does not know well. He also has something of a fixation with fruit.
